In The Memory of the late Prime Minister, Hon. David John Howard Thompson (1961- 2010)

Picture
The late David J.H. Thompson became the 6th Prime Minister of Barbados on January 16, 2008 at the age of 46.

Born on Christmas Day 1961, Prime Minister Thompson was educated in Barbados where he received his primary education at St. Gabriel's Junior School and his secondary education at Combermere School. He graduated with Honours from the Law Faculty of the University of the West Indies and also obtained a Legal Education Certificate from University of the West Indies.

He first ran for a seat in the House of Assembly in 1987 when he won the  by-election in the constituency of St. John following the untimely death of his mentor and first Prime Minister of Barbados, the Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow. He was first appointed to Cabinet in 1991 at the age of 30 and was twice leader of the Opposition.

Prime Minister Thompson was involved in the community in several cultural and sporting organizations, including the Combermere School Old Scholars' Association and established in his beloved St. John, the Families First program, a pioneering initiative that aims to re-establish and re-assert the family unit as the paramount and core constituent in the development of communities.

Prime Minister Thompson died of pancreatic cancer on October 23, 2010 at his family home in Mapps, St. Philip. He is survived by his wife Mara and three daughters - Misha, Oya and Osa-Marie.
